Secondary Class Guides

Blacksmith is the offensive second-class continuation of , turning the cart-and-economy toolkit into a powerful melee class with strong self-buffs. Blacksmith stands out as one of the highest-damage second classes thanks to tools like , , and the Merchant core damage package of plus . AoY's Game Changes make that package easier to sustain too: costs 50% less zeny, lasts 2.5 minutes, lasts 3.5 minutes, and lasts 2 minutes.
It is also one of the few class routes that can pivot into forging-related utility. At the same time, Blacksmith can be expensive to play because of zeny costs and consumable pressure, so this class rewards players who already have a little setup or who want a stronger midgame damage spike more than a completely fresh start.
Details
Blacksmith is a damage-heavy merchant second class with strong self-buffs, strong weapon flexibility, and a rare side path into forging support and converters.

Builds
This is the classic AoE-oriented Blacksmith route from the iRO guide. It centers on for pack clearing, while layering the Blacksmith buff package of , , , and . Those upkeep windows are much friendlier on AoY because lasts 3.5 minutes, lasts 2.5 minutes, and lasts 2 minutes.
The iRO guide also notes that is excellent for temporarily disabling mobs, while stays available for stronger single-target finishing at 50% reduced zeny cost on AoY.
This is the more accessible battle route from the iRO guide and is the one most often recommended for players with less funding. It focuses on high attack speed, strong melee uptime, and the Blacksmith buff trio of , , and . On AoY, those buff durations are stretched to 3.5 minutes, 2 minutes, and 2.5 minutes respectively, which makes the route feel much less maintenance-heavy.
The iRO warning for this route is that Renewal Blacksmith flee is weaker than thief-class dodging, so you usually still need some sustain gear and recovery items. It is a strong option if you want a simpler combat-oriented Blacksmith without leaning fully into expensive Mammonite spam.
The iRO guide still documents the traditional pure forger route, but it also strongly warns that the build is no longer recommended for general play because better weapons, converters, and endows now outperform classic forged elemental gear in most situations.
If you still want to follow the forging path, the guide recommends leveling first as a battle build and only resetting later into high DEX and LUK. It also notes that most modern smith players get more long-term value by progressing into instead. AoY does give the niche forging route one custom upside, though: forged weapons can roll Random Options on this server.

Equipment
For early beginners on AoY, the remain one of the best starting systems here too. Eden gear is still one of the cleanest early gearing routes for Blacksmith, and the axe path transitions especially well into later battle-focused progression.
If you are mobbing or tanking groups of monsters, healing items usually need to be consumed consistently and sometimes spammed. is one of the most practical low-cost sustain options because of its cheap price and low weight, and it can be bought from the Chef's Assistant at Alberta docks. For broader comparisons and more recovery options, see .
When planning more expensive upgrades, it is usually better to look ahead to the eventual Mechanic path instead of overspending on pieces that will be replaced quickly. That helps keep your Blacksmith gearing efficient while still building toward future progression.

Job Change
You can become a Blacksmith once your Merchant reaches Job Level 40 or 50. On Age of Ymir, you have two practical routes:
| Route | What You Get | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Blacksmith class access through the full guild route in , including item collection and a written test. | The iRO Blacksmith guide notes that this job change mostly takes place in Einbroch. This is the right route if you want the full official progression flow. | |
| Immediate Blacksmith advancement and automatic quest/platinum skills through . | The current script documents explicit incentive item bundles for first-job changes, but it does not list a separate Blacksmith-specific reward package. What it does guarantee here is convenience and automatic quest/platinum skill unlocks. |
Recommendation
- Take the official route if you want the full Einbroch Blacksmith guild process from the iRO guide.
- Use the AoY Job Master if you want to skip the quest chain and move directly into the class for progression.
